Timothy Sun 孫穎麟

One of the most prominent musicians in Hong Kong and Macau, Timothy Sun began his music studies at the age of seven. A student of George Galway in saxophone and clarinet at the Ellen Wilkinson High School of Art in England from 1997, Sun became the first Chinese saxophone and clarinet student at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama to be awarded a full scholarship for his Bachelor’s degree in 2001, where his principal teachers were John Harle and Christian Forshaw. He also studied with clarinettist Julian Farrell, and completed his Master’s degree in 2006.

 Since completing his studies, Sun has gone on to become a fixture of the Hong Kong music scene as one of its internationally recognised musical talents.  He has performed at the Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, Barbican Centre and Shanghai Concert Hall as a chamber musician. In 2016 he received the Paul Creston Award in New York and, in recent seasons, has appeared in over a hundred recitals and orchestral concerts across Asia and Europe. As a soloist he has performed with the Macau Chinese Orchestra, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, the Zhejiang Symphony Orchestra, and the Guiyang Symphony Orchestra, and has also collaborated as principal soloist with numerous other regional and youth orchestras and musical establishments.

 Sun has worked with numerous Hong Kong-based composers including Fung Lam, Kim Kuok Ip, Austin Yip, Joyce Cheung, Julie Kuok, Joyce Tang, Yin Ng, Pong Law and Charles Kwong, and has taken part in many cross-genre performances with artists ranging from dancers, choreographers, photographers, and multimedia artists. Over the years he has been interviewed by notable media outlets in Hong Kong and Macau, including the South China Morning Post, UK-Chinese Times, Macao Daily, and RTHK Radio 4, which broadcast his performance live. From 2017 to 2018 Timothy performed at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) as Ensemble-in-Residence with the group he founded, Contrast Trio, featuring violin, saxophone and piano. Timothy is one of the principal artists of Buffet Group and Vandoren Paris, and is additionally a founding member of the music group Smash, featuring harmonica, piano and saxophone, and released an original CD with the group in 2020. 

Today, between his many performances and engagements, Timothy Sun also works as saxophone lecturer coach at the Macau Conservatory, The University of Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong Baptist University.

孫穎麟為現時港澳最活躍的薩克管青年演奏家之一。七歲開始接受音樂訓練,1997年赴笈英國衛甘遜藝術中學主修音樂及藝術,師從哥威學習薩克管和單簧管;2001年獲全額獎學金入讀倫敦市政廳音樂及戲劇學院,師從世界著名薩克管演奏家哈爾及霍梭,亦跟隨法里奧學習單簧管及馬田學習長笛。完成學士學位後,獲該校頒發獎學金進修碩士課程,2006年以優異成績畢業。

 孫氏畢業回港後除了繼續活躍於本地樂壇,亦於紐約卡內基音樂廳、倫敦威格摩音樂廳、巴比肯藝術中心、上海音樂廳等地舉行獨奏會。他於2016年在紐約榮獲克雷斯頓獎,近年於歐亞參與了過百場音樂會演出。孫氏又以獨奏者身份與香港小交響樂團、澳門樂團、貴陽交響樂團、澳門中樂團、香港節慶管弦樂團、香港創樂團 、泛亞交響樂團、香港城市管樂團、通利新青年管樂團、澳門青年管樂團、澳門青年管弦樂團等合作,並為多個本地樂團及音樂團體獻藝。

 孫氏致力與本地作曲家合作,曾演出林丰、葉劍國丶葉浩堃、張貝芝、郭品文、羅健邦、鄺展維、伍卓賢、鄧慧中等人作品。他亦參與多項跨媒體演出,與不同舞蹈家、攝影師、編舞家以及多媒體製作人合作。多年來,他曾接受《南華早報》、《英中時報》及《澳門時報》訪問,其演出更被香港電台第四台廣播。他創辦的薩克管、小提琴及鋼琴組合Contrast於2017-18年度成為中文大學的駐院樂團。他也是由口琴、鋼琴及薩克管組合Smash Trio成員之一,該樂團於2020年發布了首張專輯。孫氏現為法國Buffet Crampon及Vandoren Paris品牌的藝術家。孫氏也熱衷於教學,分別於澳門演藝學院、香港大學及香港浸會大學任教 。
